Every game on the casino floor is a bet with a price. The only question worth asking is what that price is — and for almost every game, it’s rigged against you on purpose. For exactly two, a skilled player can flip it. Here’s the math, game by game, and why “the house always wins” is a theorem, not a slogan.

How to read any casino game

One tool reads them all: expected value. Multiply each outcome’s payoff by its probability, add them up, and you have the average result of one bet:

The house edge is just the negative of that, per dollar staked. When EV is , the house edge is 5% — the casino keeps a nickel of every dollar that crosses the table, on average, forever. It doesn’t win every hand. It wins the long run, because it pays winners a little less than the true odds. Do that a million times and the law of large numbers does the rest.

Two games break the pattern — not with a betting system, but with genuine skill. In both, a disciplined player can hold a real, positive edge. In both, that’s far harder (and more dangerous) than the movies let on.

Blackjack counting and winning poker are real and mathematically positive. They are also, for almost everyone, a bad idea. The math is the easy part; everything around it is the catch. The edge is tiny and the variance is savage — a ~1% edge means the swings dwarf the signal, so it takes a large bankroll and iron discipline just to survive to the long run (which is a Kelly criterion problem — overbetting a small edge is how skilled players still go broke). The casino isn’t a fair opponent: it can shuffle early, cut the deck deep, lower your limits, or bar you outright. And “easy money” is the tell of a losing gambler — the reality is a grinding, low-margin job the house is actively trying to end.
