Terms of use
Teacher’s Bet is an analytics calculator. It accepts no wagers, holds no funds and facilitates no bet placement, and every number it prints is arithmetic on inputs you supplied or on prices a venue posted publicly. Using the site means accepting the terms below.
The whole thing in six lines
- Not a sportsbook. No wagers, no funds, no bet placement, no picks.
- Outputs are calculations, not advice, and nothing here guarantees any outcome.
- For adults of legal betting age; 21 or older is the standing policy.
- Not available everywhere — the live board and the odds API return HTTP 451 in Washington State.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled, and cancelling is two clicks: the account menu, then Stripe’s billing portal.
- Questions and disputes: alex@teachersbet.com, which reaches a person.
Who operates this site
Teacher’s Bet is operated by Alex Thornton in Syracuse, New York. A New York entity, Escapement Technologies, is in formation; when it is formed, this page will be updated to name it as the operator. There is no other office, no support company and no third party authorised to speak for the site. The one contact address is alex@teachersbet.com.
What the service is
A set of calculators and a live price board. It converts odds, removes a book’s margin to leave a fair probability, computes expected value, sizes a stake by the Kelly criterion, splits an arbitrage, grades a logged price against the close, and prices prediction-market fees — showing the derivation for each.
It is not a sportsbook, a betting exchange, a broker, an adviser or a money transmitter. It executes nothing, settles nothing and holds nothing. It has no connection to any account you may hold with a book or an exchange, and it cannot deposit, withdraw, place, cancel or grade a real wager.
No advice, no picks, no guarantee
No page on this site tells anyone to place a bet, and no tier ever will. Outputs are calculations, framed as calculations, on inputs you supplied or on posted market prices. What you do with a number is your decision and your risk.
Nothing here guarantees an outcome, because nothing can. Expected value is a long-run average over many repetitions, not a forecast of the next result — the responsible gambling page works through how ordinary a long losing run is with a real edge in hand. When the inputs contain no edge, the answer printed is $0, never rounded up into something that looks actionable.
The numbers, and their limits
- Prices come from third parties — the Kalshi exchange API for prediction-market prices and a commercial odds API for sportsbook lines, both first-party licensed. Nothing here is scraped.
- A price can be stale, wrong or withdrawn between the moment it was pulled and the moment you read it. Every quote on the site carries two timestamps: when it was pulled, and when the venue last moved it. A stale price is labelled stale rather than dressed up as current.
- The free board is served on a delay, and the paid tier removes that delay. Each price shows its own age either way.
- A price shown here is not an offer. Nothing on this site can be accepted, traded or executed. The venue’s own screen governs, and where the two disagree the venue is right.
- The site labels rather than guesses. Every fair line ships with the number of venues behind it and an agreement label, so a thin market or a disagreeing one is visible as one rather than smoothed into a confident-looking number. Refusing outright — publishing no consensus at all below two qualifying venues — is the design, and it is not yet enforced on the published board. That gap is stated on the methodology page rather than papered over here.
- If a number here is wrong, that is a bug, not a disclaimer to hide behind. Report it to the address above; the corrections process is in the editorial policy.
Who may use it
Adults of legal betting age. The standing policy is 21 or older, and where the legal age where you live is higher, the higher number applies. Before the live board can be used, the app asks you to confirm you are of legal betting age; that confirmation is stored in your own browser. No date of birth is collected and no identity check is performed, because the site holds no funds and processes no wager.
You are responsible for the law that applies where you are. Nothing on this site is a representation that using it, or gambling, is lawful in your jurisdiction.
Where it is available
Washington State law — RCW 9.46.240 — restricts the transmission of gambling information over the internet. Whether an analytics calculator that displays posted market prices falls inside that statute has not been settled, and this site does not claim to know the answer.
The cautious reading is the one shipped. Requests from Washington receive HTTP 451 on the odds-bearing surfaces — the live board and the odds API. The Learn course, the calculators, the formula sheet and these policy pages are served normally, because they carry no posted market prices at all. If counsel concludes the gate is unnecessary, it comes out; it is one configuration value, not an architecture.
Elsewhere the site is served worldwide, which is not a statement that using it is lawful where you are.
Prediction markets
Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated event-contract exchange and is the only exchange this site currently reads. The status of the others moves, so it is dated rather than asserted: as of 24 July 2026, Polymarket serves US traders through QCX LLC, trading as Polymarket US, which holds a CFTC designation as a contract market, while Polymarket’s global platform and the Betfair Exchange are not offered to US residents. Whether, and in what form, either venue’s data may be displayed to a US audience is an open question that counsel has not answered, and it is not resolved on this page. Neither venue is ingested in the meantime.
Teacher’s Bet is not a licensed sportsbook, not a registered exchange, and not a broker or an adviser of any kind. Nothing on the site is a solicitation to trade an event contract, and the fee arithmetic it publishes is a calculation on a published fee schedule, not a recommendation to enter a position.
Accounts
An account is optional: every calculator and the whole Learn course work without one. Where an account exists, sign-in is passwordless — a one-time link and a six-digit code, both valid for 15 minutes and both bound to the browser that requested them.
- Keep the link and the code to yourself; anyone holding them in the same browser session can sign in as you.
- Three signed-in devices at a time. A fourth sign-in drops the least recently used one.
- “Sign out of all devices” revokes every session immediately.
- An account may be closed for hammering the API past the published rate limits, for redistributing licensed market data, or for presenting the site’s output as picks or as a sportsbook’s own numbers.
Subscriptions, renewals and cancelling
Stated here in plain language rather than buried, because that is what the rules require and also what a reader deserves. The same terms are on the pricing page, in the same words.
The billing terms
- Checkout is not open yet. Nothing on this site can charge anyone today.
- Prices: Dean’s List is $39 a month or $390 a year. The first 100 subscribers pay $25 a month for their first 12 months, then the standard $39.
- It renews automatically. Monthly plans charge every month on the same date; annual plans charge once a year. It keeps renewing until it is cancelled.
- The amount and the date are shown before you pay — on the checkout page, next to the button that authorises the charge — and again in the account panel, which ships alongside checkout.
- Cancel from the account menu. It opens the Stripe billing portal, where cancelling is one click. Two clicks in total, and the second one is Stripe’s. No email, no phone call, no chat queue, no retention offer.
- Cancelling stops the next charge. Access runs to the end of the period already paid for.
- The founder rate is a 12-month discount, not a price lock. There is no lifetime plan on this site and there will not be one.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. Card details are entered on Stripe’s page and never touch this site’s servers — see privacy.
- Mistaken or disputed charges go to alex@teachersbet.com. No refund schedule is published yet; one will be on this page and on the pricing page before checkout opens.
What a subscription does not buy is worth stating too: no picks, no advice, no promise of profit, no access to a formula the free tier lacks. The formulas are published as an MIT-licensed library that anyone can install and run.
Acceptable use
- Per-IP rate limits apply to the API. Traffic past them gets an HTTP 429; sustained automated collection past them is not permitted.
- Market data on the board is licensed from third parties. Redistributing, reselling or republishing it as a feed is not permitted.
- Do not present the site’s output as picks, as betting advice, or as a sportsbook’s own numbers.
- Do not use the site to break the law where you are, or to help anyone under the legal betting age to gamble.
Content and licences
- Site content — the writing, the design and the chalkboard artwork — is © 2026 Alex Thornton. Quoting a passage with a link back is welcome; republishing a page whole is not.
- The math library is separate and open. teachersbettextbook is MIT-licensed and governed by that licence, not by this page. See open source.
- Market data belongs to the venues and providers it came from, under their terms.
- The Teacher’s Bet name and the Ace of Apples logo are the site’s marks and are not licensed for use elsewhere. No trademark registration is claimed.
No warranty, and the limit of liability
The site is provided as it is. No promise is made that it will be available, uninterrupted, complete or correct at any given moment, and market data in particular can be late, missing or wrong. To the maximum extent the law allows, Teacher’s Bet is not liable for any loss arising from use of the site, including money lost betting or trading.
Nothing in this section removes a right you hold that cannot be waived where you live.
Still with counsel — stated rather than papered over
Four things on this page are genuinely unsettled. Filling the gaps with confident boilerplate would break the rule the calculators run on, so instead they are listed:
- Governing law and dispute resolution are not stated yet. A pre-launch legal review is under way and this page will name them when it concludes.
- The refund schedule is not published. It lands here and on the pricing page before checkout opens.
- The Washington gate is caution about RCW 9.46.240, not a legal conclusion about it.
- Displaying prediction-market data beyond Kalshi to US users is an open question and is not being done in the meantime.
None of this page is legal advice, and none of it is a legal opinion about your situation.
Changes to these terms
When these terms change, the date under the title changes with them and the change is described rather than quietly substituted — the same standard the editorial policy holds every other page to. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the version then published.
Frequently asked questions
Does Teacher’s Bet take bets?
No. It accepts no wagers, holds no funds and facilitates no bet placement. It is not a sportsbook, an exchange, a broker or a money transmitter, and it executes nothing. Every output is arithmetic on inputs a user supplied or on posted market prices, with the derivation shown.
Does it give advice or picks?
No. No page says to place a bet, and nothing guarantees an outcome. When the inputs contain no edge the answer printed is $0 rather than a rounded-up number that looks actionable.
Is Teacher’s Bet available in Washington State?
Not in full. Washington’s RCW 9.46.240 restricts the online transmission of gambling information, and whether an analytics calculator falls inside it is unsettled. Requests from Washington receive HTTP 451 on the live board and the odds API; the Learn course, the calculators and the policy pages are served normally, because they carry no posted market prices.
How old do you have to be?
21 or older is the standing policy, and where the legal betting age is higher, the higher number applies. The app asks for a confirmation of legal betting age before the live board can be used; no date of birth is collected and no identity check is performed.
How does a subscription renew and cancel?
It renews automatically until cancelled — monthly plans every month, annual plans once a year — with the amount and date shown before the charge is authorised. Cancelling is two clicks, the account menu and then Stripe’s billing portal; it stops the next charge and leaves access running to the end of the paid period. Checkout is not open yet.
Is there a lifetime plan?
No, and there will not be one. The founder rate is a 12-month discount, after which the standard price applies to the next renewal.
